Cleaning with Cotton Balls

One of my favorite homemaking tools is The Creative Home Organizer by Emilie Barnes.  Her book overflows with tips and tricks that make managing your home easier.  And shouldn’t that be our purpose every day?  At least, that’s my thinking… how can I get this done efficiently and quickly?

Since mildew is a sneaky little monster in my home, I have trouble getting rid of it in the shower caulking of our master bathroom.  We have a stand alone shower, no tub, causing water to collect in the caulking where the tile and shower floor meet.  I have tried various cleaners, all claiming to get rid of mildew, but to no avail.

In comes Emilie and her easy mildew-eliminating method.  Ready?  Here it is.

  1. Soak a cotton ball in a little bleach.
  2. Place cotton ball on top of mildew.
  3. Leave overnight.
  4. Remove & throw away in the morning.

Sounds too easy, right?  But it works!  And works very well!  You will find that when the cotton ball is soaked in bleach it becomes malleable, making it fit well and stick to wherever the mildew may be.  Kind of like gum or sticky tack.  And then the bleach does the hard work for you!

So, go find yourself some cotton balls and bleach and attack that pesky mildew that won’t go away!

I have this same problem! Mildew grows behind the caulking. We live in military housing, so we can’t just redo the caulking… I’ve had maintenance come redo it twice, and it still grows. I’m doing this tonight!!

    Thanks!
