Garage Sale Finds 7/1/11

My mother-in-law is awesome and came over Friday morning to watch the girls so I could have some alone time.  Even though it was raining, I still decided to head out to a couple garage sales.  One was a fluke but this second one was fabulous!  TONS of prek and kindergarten learning tools and books!

Brylee is really into Curious George right now, so I was excited to find 2 new Curious George coloring books ($0.25/each) and a new puzzle ($0.50).  The Preschool Almanac book was $1 and is packed with great ideas and crafts for each month of the year.

Believe it or not, we don’t own Chicka Chicka Boom Boom yet, so I picked up this one in great condition for $0.50.  I read a lot of Richard Scarry growing up and have a huge fondness for these books.  This treasury was $1 in excellent condition.

The two games in the middle were great finds at $2 each.  One is a shape/color BINGO game and the other a Fisher Price Go Fish game (interactive, not the card game).  Both are perfect for her to play right now!

I also found a pair of Fiskars preschool scissors for $0.50 (not pictured).  We have one pair but with multiple children, it’s good to have a second pair handy!  ;)

This box is awesome!  I haven’t quite delved into it yet, but it’s Alligators to Zucchini: 20 Early Literacy Games from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a curriculum company.  It’s brand new and filled with manipulatives, word cards, and a teacher’s guide.  I got it for $25.  I wasn’t sure if it was a good deal, but the price I found for it online says it’s worth over $500.  (Which is a bit ridiculous I think but it’s from the same curriculum company our public schools use and I know that stuff is pricey.) So I think I made a good decision.  :)   I can’t wait to open it up and use it with Brylee!

I could have bought so.  much.  more.  at that sale but we are on pretty limited funds right now.  I think for $33 (I think that’s what I spent total) I got some great things to use with Brylee when starting preschool next year!

Good finds, Carolyn!! Leah is into Curious George, too!! So, it sounds like you’ve decided to homeschool? Or are you just doing pre-school at home to get her ready? You constantly amaze me, little mama!! xoxox

We are pretty sure we are going to homeschool. But yes, we are going to start with preschool next year to see how it goes. I feel a bit overwhelmed, but I’ve been slowly looking into it and I’m amazed at all the free resources online! Lots of Biblical ones too! Plus I do have a teaching degree and while I never want to go back to teaching, I miss it a lot. So this is the best of both worlds. :) We will see how it goes, though, lol! But I plan to post everything I research, decide on, and eventually our preschool activities. You could totally do it too. :)

Love all the great things you found! I’ll have a preschooler this year too. Preschool and kindergarten are my favorite to teach, there’s just so many great resources available and children that age love to learn! Have you heard of file folder games? Google it…all free and so fun!

    Thanks for linking up!

    • Carolyn says:

Yes.. I LOVE file folder games!! We finally got a better printer that saves on ink, so I can’t wait to print out a bunch. AND I just recently ordered laminating sheets for my laminator that hubby bought me awhile ago. I am so ready to start making some! You are right about all the great resources out there. It’s absolutely incredible and very encouraging. I don’t feel so overwhelmed. :)

Great finds! I love finding new things for my younger students as they ofter get neglected in the curriculum department. It looks like you will have lots of fun learning time with your little one this year!

I am very much looking forward to doing some more focused “school” stuff with my young ones. My oldest still isn’t quite ready for preschool, maybe next spring. But she does love whenever I have learning activities for her, which I try to do every week with tot school. I can’t wait to get into your homeschool section on your site, Briana!

  4. Oh wow! SCORE on the curriculum!!! I’m hoping to run into a good school tools sale soon, we dont have many of those around here. Looks like a great morning out!

  5. Pretty nice post. I just stumbled upon your weblog and wished to say that I’ve truly enjoyed surfing around your blog posts. After all I’ll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you write again very soon!

    • Carolyn says:

Thank you so much!! I am glad you are enjoying the site! I try to write a couple posts every day, except for Sundays and Monday (hubby’s days off, so we are usually out and about and busy). So glad to have a new fan!! :)

  6. These are such great finds! What a fantastic garage sale that you went to. I can’t believe you found a box of those games with the teachers guide and all! That will be so nice to have, and will maybe cut down on some prep time for you. You should do a post on it when you get some time to dive into it. I would love to see the kinds of things it has in there. :)

I love to go out when it is raining. Not many people do, which means more good deals for me. :)

    • Carolyn says:

I briefly went through it but that’s a great idea on the post! I will. Maybe I’ll get into it today with the girls because I’m feeling unmotivated to do much else. :) and yes, I did love sale-ing in the rain! ;)

  7. Wow! Great educational finds. We have lots of yard sales in our area, but I haven’t had much luck finding education materials. Hopefully, I’ll find some soon.

    • Carolyn says:

Allyson, I actually have had good luck with the educational materials. But now I am on the hunt for 3T clothing and up for my girls, and I am having no luck with that at all! But now is the lull time for garage sales in FL because it’s so stinking hot. Hopefully in the fall I can find some things. Good luck and thanks for stopping by!
