Make Your Own Mac-n-Cheese Bar

Macaroni and cheese is a staple at our house.  Between hubby and my two toddlers, we go through a lot!  But there are two conditions when I make it.

One, it cannot be from the box.  It’s just something about that unnatural color of neon orange cheese sauce.  Maybe it’s just me.  Instead, I boil up some pasta, drain and add in butter, milk and shredded cheddar cheese.  Delicious!

Two, there has to be some veggies added in.  I would like to try to puree some one day and add in veggies that way.  But for now, I just chop up some cooked veggies or throw in some baby spinach.

You can also add in some protein to really beef up your mac-n-cheese meal!  Hubby likes his with cooked bacon and some broccoli, sprinkled with Parmesan cheese.  This is the only way he will eat broccoli!

To have your own Mac-n-Cheese bar to please all members of your family, simply whip up some basic macaroni and cheese.  Then set out a few of the following.

  • Proteins (cooked hamburger meat, taco seasoned cooked ground turkey, shredded chicken, cut up deli ham, cooked bacon, diced hot dogs)
  • Veggies (cooked broccoli, carrots, or peas, baby spinach, lettuce and tomato to go with seasoned ground turkey)
  • Additional toppings you think would go well (Parmesan cheese, sour cream)
